USV full name: Unmanned Surface Vehicle.

USV is a fully automatic surface robot that can be navigated in accordance with the default task without the need for remote control, with precise satellite positioning and self sensing.

USV used in oceanographic research, June 2011
Unmanned surface vehicles (USV) or autonomous surface vehicles (ASV) are vehicles that operate on the surface of the water (watercraft) without a crew.

USVs are valuable in oceanography, as they are more capable than moored or drifting weather buoys, but far cheaper than the equivalent weather ships and research vessels, and more flexible than commercial-ship contributions. Wave gliders, in particular, harness wave energy for primary propulsion and, with solar cells to power their electronics, have months of marine persistence for both academic and naval applications.

Powered USVs are popular for use in hydrographic survey. Using a small USV in parallel to traditional survey vessels as a 'force-multiplier' can double survey coverage and reduce time on-site. This method was used for a survey carried out in the Bering Sea, off Alaska; the ASV Global 'C-Worker 5' autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) collected 2,275 nautical miles of survey, 44% of the project total. This was a first for the survey industry and resulted in a saving of 25 days at sea.

Military applications for USVs include powered seaborne targets and minehunting. Operational USVs with offensive capability include the Israeli Protector USV.(from wiki)

Unmanned surface vehicles development trend

In recent years, unmanned vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles are gradually familiar with the public. Google is the pioneer in the field of unmanned automotive research and development. The end of May this year, the company announced that its unmanned vehicle project is to completely eliminate the artificial intervention in the direction of automatic development, automatic unmanned car prototype test is about to expect a few years to carry out road test drive. At present, Google is manufacturing about 100 automatic unmanned car prototype.
UAVs are also trying to get into people's lives. According to foreign media reports, online shopping giant Amazon is seeking the US government permission to launch UAV in the United States flight test. Last December, Amazon founder Besos announced plans to use the UAV to launch delivery services, and said that if the US Federal Aviation Administration regulations permit, Amazon will launch the service in 2015. Amazon's plan is to send some of the items within 30 minutes after the order to the consumer. This "UAV half-hour delivery plan" is quite eye-catching, quickly become a hot topic.
In fact, in the field of unmanned technology, research and exploration of unmanned ships are also underway, and those wolves at sea will probably enter the era of unmanned times. British Rolls-Royce (Luo - Luo company) optimistic about this attitude. As one of the world's largest engine manufacturers and shipbuilding suppliers, the company is determined to further develop unmanned vehicles to develop ocean-going unmanned ships.
The development of unmanned ships is almost no difficulty at the technical level, and there are many ships with automation equipment. The advent of unmanned ships is considered a matter of time. "In the near future, unmanned ships will keep pace with the unmanned aerial vehicles, submarines, and unmanned cars that are being tested," said Oscar Levante, head of ocean-going engineering at the company.
In the previous Moscow International Innovation Forum, Zhuhai City Yunzhou Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd. (Band Name: Oceanalpha) independent research and development of the "pilot" number of high-speed ocean unmanned "fire" a, the integration of a variety of high-tech Technology, can be widely used in environmental monitoring and search and rescue, security patrol and other areas of the "surface intelligent robot", because of its versatility, so that both Chinese and Russian Prime Minister "point praise."
According to reports, this "surface intelligent robot" combines the ship, communications, automation, robot control, remote monitoring, network systems and other technologies to achieve the independent navigation, intelligent obstacle avoidance, long-distance communications, real-time video transmission and network monitoring And other functions. Prior to this technology only in the United States, Israel and other countries in the hands of a few countries

The latest Ocean USV Platform can be used for hydrology research, scientific exploration, hydrographic survey, emergency search and rescue, security patrol and other work on sea. We will make continuous efforts to develop more advanced USV solution to better serve people's life.
